Gardening Calendar - August

Carry On Watering

Plenty of jobs for this month

1.Prune Hedges especially Evergreens and this is the best time to prune Beech hedges 2.August is also a great time to trim over all your topiary plants to keep them in perfect shape 3.In the fruit garden prune out old raspberry canes which have finished fruiting and tie in the new vigorous ones. 4.One other key pruning task in August is to prune Wisterias, but shortening the long green whippy shoots to 5-6 leaves, which will encourage flower bud formation for next year 5. Its a great time to take cuttings of shrubs, where the wood is now beginning to ripen (semi ripe cuttings) such as Escallonia, Cotoneaster and many other evergreens. Not only are there the current tasks in hand, but now is a very importanmt time to plan for next year. Bulbs will be arriving in store in the next few weeks so start planning your schemes and think of the colour combinations you want to acheieve.
